pPaul Hovan is a Fitness Coach. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Ed/Exercise Science from Central Connecticut State University. He is a Certified Sports Nutritionist, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, and Certified Sports Conditioning Trainer. He is First AID, CPR, and AED certified. He has competed many times and has done many photo shoots. He’s been over weight and depressed. He hit rock bottom and came back better and stronger than ever. He transformed his mind first, which then made his body follow suit.

Could you tell us a little about yourself?

Well, there’s a lot to say, but I’ll keep it short, lol. My name is Paul Hovan Jr. and I am the owner and founder of Hov Hustle Fitness LLC, which is an online training and nutritional coaching business. I love weight training, eating healthy, and pushing myself beyond my limitations. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Ed/Exercise Science from Central Connecticut State University. I am a Certified Sports Nutritionist, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, and Certified Sports Conditioning Trainer. I love what I do and love helping others discover their true potential. Most people put limits on what they can accomplish, and I’m the one to bring out that inner potential they’ve been hiding from.

What inspired you to become a fitness coach?

I started out as a 250 lb. offensive and defensive lineman in high school playing football, and realized that once it was over, I didn’t want to play football anymore; but I knew it was time to get back to a healthy weight and feeling better about myself. Long story short, during my senior year of high school once football was over, I took it upon myself to lose the excess weight and get healthier. I read every article on legitimate sites such as PubMed and WebMD about fat loss and proper nutrition. I seeked out books written by Exercise Science Specialists about how to develop a proper exercise program and cardiovascular protocol. After all the research and putting the new knowledge to work, I lost 55 pounds in 6 months. I knew that if I could do it on my own, just from 6 months of intense studying and researching, I could also help other people do the same. So from there, I applied for my Bachelor’s in Physical Education with the major focus of Exercise Science to take my knowledge, application, and expertise to an entirely different level.

What does your daily diet look like? Do you give yourself “cheat days”? Do you have any favorite clean recipes you would like to share?

My diet is very simple. I don’t like to complicate things at all with my nutrition, so whatever makes it easier, I’m all for it. I prep and cook most of my food in one day, usually on a Sunday, so that all I have to do is weigh and measure out my portions and then I’m good to go. I follow a flexible dieting approach with my nutrition. A lot of people get stuck in that thought process of, “I’m so tired of eating the same boring thing every single day.” And that’s why most people fail and rebound to gain back all the weight they lost; it’s because they are taking too aggressive of a stance with their nutrition. Flexible dieting is just as it sounds; being flexible within your diet program. I know exactly how many grams of carbohydrates, protein, and fat I’m supposed to consume everyday, and then I proceed with filling those macronutrient requirements with the food I want. Some days my carbs come from oatmeal and rice, and then other days I’ll stop at a Dunkin Donuts to get a muffin and some donuts. Some days my fats will come from extra virgin olive oil and avocados, and then other days I’ll have peanut butter and grass-fed butter. I like variety and I’ve found that with myself, and the hundreds of clients I’ve coached, this nutritional approach works best, not only for results, but also for mental health and staying away from eating disorders, primarily binge eating. I never feel the need to binge on chocolate or sweets because if I want them one day, I have them, as long as they fit within my macronutrient boundaries. Many people don’t know that much about this approach, which is why I wrote an ebook going extremely in detail with it, which is available on my website.

Are there fitness icons who inspired or influenced you to be involved in fitness industry?

To be honest, I never really looked up to anyone. I’m the one in my family who is the fitness nut, so I get told all the time that I’m the one people look up to for taking the first steps toward improving their health and wellness, and that makes me feel good. I’ve always admired the physiques from “back in the day”, such as Arnold, Flex Wheeler, Sergio Oliva, and guys from that era. I love the aesthetic look, so that is always the picture I have in my mind of how I ultimately want to look.

Would you like to share your photo shoot experience with Natalie’s Team?

I’ve had the pleasure of shooting with many photographers who I would consider the best at what they do, and Natalie is absolutely one of them. We went over the looks I wanted to capture long before I even got to California. I sent her images of photos I really liked and we would go about trying to emulate the style of them. Natalie is amazing and there is a reason I’m still a part of her team with all of my other projects, not just getting photographs. She is a true professional, genius, and master at what she does. It was a blessing to have met her. If anyone is looking for an amazing photo shoot and someone to develop a successful professional relationship with, look no further than Natalie.

Any shout outs?

First and foremost, I have to give a shout out to God. I’m big on my Faith and know that I certainly would not be in the position I am without the strength and help from Him. I’d also have to thank Natalie and her team; you all are quite amazing. I want to thank all of my family, especially my parents and sister for always having my back and giving such overwhelming help and support over the years. To all of my clients who make my work fun and give me meaning for what I do. And to my fiance Bev, she is the greatest thing that ever happened to me. I consider myself very blessed to have her in my life!
